Safer Bike Lanes Coming to Midtown

Many people who live and work in Manhattan rely on bicycles to get around. They are a great way to get around the traffic and congestion that the city is well known for. Unfortunately, it is very difficult for bicyclists to get around safely because they are often forced to ride with all of the other cars in traffic. Of course, this is very dangerous and results in many fatal bicycle crashes each year. In 2017 alone, 23 cyclists were killed in fatal crashes throughout New York City. In an effort to combat this growing problem, city transportation officials announced two lanes specifically for bicyclists in Midtown.

These two lanes are in addition to plans that city officials announced in December regarding another two protected bike lanes being added to 13th street. These new bike lanes will be protected by a physical barrier to make sure no cars or trucks double park where the lanes should be. Hopefully, these new safety measures will reduce the number of accidents and fatalities that bicyclists in New York City are often the victims of. Bicyclists don’t have the same protections as passengers in cars, buses, or trucks, so these accidents are often much more serious.
