Between August 2 and August 8, 2017, New York State police issued 21,148 tickets during a campaign they call “Speed Week.” The report, which was released on August 11, revealed that there were 268 personal injury accidents throughout the state that police responded to. Unfortunately, these accidents caused 5 fatalities as well as injuries amongst 393 other people.

796 total tickets were issued throughout New York City by State Troopers. 20 were for speeding, 22 were issued for distracted driving, 19 were issued for failure to wear a seat belt or use proper child restraints, and 4 were because a driver did not abide by the “Move Over Law.” New York City was the only region that did not result in any driving while intoxicated arrests and actually had the lowest number of tickets issued overall in any region of the state.

For comparison, Long Island issued nearly twice the number of tickets (1,526) with 309 for speeding, 16 driving while intoxicated arrests, 113 distracted driving tickets, 88 seatbelt violations, and 8 violations of the Move Over Law.

This is one of several “Speed Weeks” that New York State Police has conducted this year. The summer months are generally the most dangerous time for drivers each year because people head to concerts, the beach, take weekend road trips, vacations, etc. in the summer than they do other times of the year.
