Unfortunately, the number of accidents involving pedestrians has been on the rise steadily. Pedestrian accidents account for a significant number of fatalities in New York State. In an effort to reduce the number of pedestrian accidents, Governor Andrew Cuomo has recently announced a $110 million dollar initiative to reduce the number of pedestrian accidents and fatalities throughout the state.

Parts of the initiative aim to make sure communities are more walkable and allow for greater visibility in walkable areas so drivers can see pedestrians easier. One of the other major concerns presented in this initiative includes encouraging pedestrians not to walk at night, and if they do, make sure they are visible to cars on the road. This has been especially encouraged because Daylight Savings Time recently ended, making it so the sun sets earlier.

One of the ways that New York State has decided to implement pedestrian safety is by teaching pedestrians about safety and about the statistics related to when pedestrian accidents occur most. One such statistic is that the majority of pedestrian accidents happen in November and 40-percent of them take place at night or early in the morning before the sun rises. The initiative also encourages law enforcement to ticket pedestrians who are not abiding by the safety laws and putting themselves at risk.
