Motorcycle Accidents in New York State

New York State sees thousands of motorcycle crashes each year, many of which cause injury to the driver of that motorcycle because they don’t have the same levels of protection that other motor vehicles have. What many motorcyclists don’t realize is that in New York State, they are not covered under no-fault insurance like other motorists are. Due to the fact that motorcyclists are not covered under no-fault insurance, they may be more susceptible to having to bring a personal injury lawsuit if they become injured, even if it is a minor injury. These drivers are not held to the standard that other motorists are that you must have a serious injury in order to bring a lawsuit.

Motorcyclists who are injured in an accident are required to cover his or her medical expenses through another form of insurance or possibly even pay out of pocket. New York State law requires that all motorcyclists have a motorcycle insurance policy because they have a higher rate of accidents with injuries. These drivers must have a minimum coverage limit of $25,000 for injuries for each person, $50,000 for total body injury in accidents that multiple people face injuries, $50,000 for each death in an accident, and $100,000 for a death if there are more than one fatalities that take place in that accident. Finally, motorcyclists must have a minimum of $10,000 in property damage coverage. Keep in mind that these are simply the minimum requirements and you may want to consider purchasing a higher coverage plan because medical expenses in motorcycle accidents are typically very high and may not be covered under the minimum plan.
