With the warmer weather quickly approaching, many New York State residents will spend time on boats. While we always hope that everyone is enjoying this time in a safe manner, sometimes things go wrong and people become injured. The most common factors that lead to boating accidents include inexperienced or inattentive boat operators, rough waters, and intoxicated boat operators and passengers. It is important to be aware of a few safety tips before you take your family out on the water this summer.

When operating a boat, it is essential to be aware that you can be charged with operating a boat while intoxicated and face the same penalties that a person who is driving while intoxicated may face. Operating a boat while intoxicated can reduce your coordination, concentration, and ability to process information. It is important that you have the appropriate flotation devices such as life vests, buoys that can be of assistance to anyone who falls overboard. It is also important that you have a fire extinguisher on board. Boat fires happen if an engine backfires or if gasoline vapors explode. Make sure to check that all boats have navigation lights and appropriate distress signals if there is ever an emergency or you are boating at night.

If you are in a boating accident, it is important that you report the accident to the local police immediately and the New York State Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation within 48 hours. Just like in a car accident, it is important that you exchange information with the other operator, damaged property owner, and/or injured parties.
